Climbing Overview
Ol Doinyo Lengai, or the ‘Mountain of God’ is a 2960-meter-high volcano in Tanzania, located in the Great Rift Valley in East Africa.It is the only active volcano with a carbonate lava composition. “Natro-carbonatite”, a lava rich in sodium and potassium carbonate after emission, sees the alteration of these minerals with moisture whitening the surface of the lava.
With a viscosity very close to water, its lava is the most fluid in the world, and also the coldest, with temperatures of only 590º Celsius. As it cools, the lava turns completely white. This unique landscape of a white lava volcano and the origin of its composition, the traces of successive collapses and debris avalanches are the subject of numerous scientific studies.
Full Itinerary
Drive to Mto Wa Mbu
Drive to Mto Wa Mbu and enter the Great Rift Valley, passing via Engaruka basin and into a semi-desert area hot wild and dusty with extinct volcanoes, around midday we arrive at Camp on the banks of the Engaresero river, in the afternoon take a trek to the waterfalls hidden in the Western wall of the rift valley.
A short relux at camp while waiting for your dinner. in the mid drive to the foot of Oldoinyo lengai to start the climb (approximately 4 – 5 hours climb). When you will arrive the peak, you should able to see the lava glowing.
Views Up the Rift Valley
Enjoy the sunrise and the views up the Rift Valley as far as Kenya and therefore descent and drive to the camp for shower, and late breakfast follows with a total relux. Meals and overnight at the camp.
A Walking Around the Lake Natron
In the morning after breakfast, you will have a walking around the Lake Natron with your local guide. Lake Natron one of the major flamingo breeding site in East Africa – en-route visit a Maasai “Boma” village.
You will have time to interact with Maasai people and learn their culture and day to day activities. Return to the camp for early lunch and preparation to drive back to Arusha or to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back home.
