Climbing Overview
Ol Doinyo Lengai, or the ‘Mountain of God’ is a 2960-meter-high volcano in Tanzania, located in the Great Rift Valley in East Africa.It is the only active volcano with a carbonate lava composition. “Natro-carbonatite”, a lava rich in sodium and potassium carbonate after emission, sees the alteration of these minerals with moisture whitening the surface of the lava.
With a viscosity very close to water, its lava is the most fluid in the world, and also the coldest, with temperatures of only 590º Celsius. As it cools, the lava turns completely white. This unique landscape of a white lava volcano and the origin of its composition, the traces of successive collapses and debris avalanches are the subject of numerous scientific studies.
Full Itinerary
Arusha - Lake Natron
Our driver will pick you up at your hotel in the morning and drive you to Lake Natron. The drive takes 3 to 4 hours. At the same time, the scenery on the way is picturesque and you will have an opportunity to see the local people, including Maasai tribesmen, as well as some African wildlife.
Arrive at natron in the afternoon check-in at the lodge /camp our local guide will take you on a walking tour to Ngare Sero waterfall, walk around lake natron, evening return to the camp for short relux.
Trekking to Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano - Arusha
At 1:00 a.m. driver takes you to the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano for the start of your climb. The footing on the slopes of the volcano can be treacherous, especially in the dark, Ascent of the Lengai volcano at night with a local guide.
Depending on the activity, night and day observation of the natrocarbonatite lava flows according to their position at sunrise. At the edge of the crater, you will have reached the altitude of 2,960 m. Here, you can actually hear the Ol Doinyo Lengai lava flow inside the crater of the “Mountain of God”. The descent is easier and you may be tempted to move faster.
Our driver will be awaiting you as you return to the foot of the mountain with cold drinks, ready to drive you back to the camp for a quick shower and lunch before your return to Arusha.
