Mount Meru
Journey to the Summit. Live the Adventure.
Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), and is located within Arusha National Park near the vibrant safari hub of Arusha. This dormant stratovolcano is often considered one of East Africa’s most scenic climbs, offering dramatic cliffs, a collapsed volcanic crater, and sweeping views across the surrounding plains. On clear days, climbers are rewarded with spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds in the distance.
Unlike many high-altitude treks, Mount Meru begins with a unique walking safari experience, where trekkers may encounter giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and various antelope species on the lower slopes. The trail passes through lush montane forests, giant heather zones, and alpine desert landscapes before reaching the narrow crater ridge that leads to Socialist Peak, the mountain’s summit. With fewer crowds, comfortable mountain huts, and a challenging yet rewarding ascent, Mount Meru is ideal for adventurous hikers seeking a quieter alternative to Kilimanjaro or a perfect acclimatization climb before attempting Africa’s highest peak.
