Mikumi National Park
Overview
Often described as a compact version of the Serengeti, Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and rewarding safari destinations. Located along the main Dar es Salaam–Iringa highway, Mikumi lies approximately 300 km west of Dar es Salaam and is easily reached by road, making it ideal for short safaris and first-time visitors.
Covering 3,230 square kilometers, the park is dominated by the open floodplains of the Mkata River, framed by low hills and distant mountain ranges.
This open landscape allows for excellent visibility and consistently strong wildlife viewing. Mikumi supports a wide variety of animals, including elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and crocodiles, as well as predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas.
Its combination of accessibility, open plains, and reliable game viewing makes Mikumi an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s southern safari circuit and a perfect complement to Ruaha or Nyerere National Park.

Mikumi Tour Activities
Game Drives
Game drives in Mikumi are centered around the Mkata floodplain, where wildlife gathers in large numbers. The open terrain makes it easy to spot animals throughout the day.
Elephant herds move across the plains, giraffes browse acacia trees, and lions are frequently seen resting or hunting in open grassland. Mikumi is one of the few parks in Tanzania where lion sightings are particularly consistent.
Wildlife Viewing
Because of its compact size and clear sightlines, Mikumi is ideal for travelers with limited time. Even a single-day visit can deliver rewarding wildlife encounters, making it a popular choice for weekend safaris from Dar es Salaam.
Bird Watching
Mikumi is home to over 400 bird species, thriving in its grasslands, wetlands, and river systems. Storks, herons, kingfishers, rollers, and birds of prey are commonly seen, especially around water sources.
The park is particularly attractive to birders during the green season when migratory species arrive.
Landscape and Photography
The wide-open plains of Mikumi provide classic African safari scenery with excellent light and minimal vegetation obstruction.
Early morning and late afternoon offer the best conditions for photography, with animals often silhouetted against expansive skies.
Best Time to Visit Mikumi
Dry Season (June to October)
This is the best time to visit Mikumi National Park.
Wildlife concentrates around water sources, vegetation is low, and animal sightings are frequent.
Road conditions are excellent, and game drives are consistently productive.
Short Dry Period (January to February)
These months also offer good wildlife viewing with fewer visitors. The landscape is greener following the short rains, and birdlife remains strong.
This is a good option for travelers seeking a quieter experience.
Green Season (March to May)
Heavier rains bring lush scenery and fewer tourists. While some animals disperse and access may be limited in places, bird watching is at its peak and the park feels peaceful and uncrowded.
This season is best suited for photographers and bird enthusiasts.
