Murchison Falls National Park
Overview
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and most dramatic protected area, where the power of nature is on full display. Located in northwestern Uganda, the park covers approximately 3,840 square kilometers and is defined by the Victoria Nile, which flows through the park before plunging through a narrow gorge just seven meters wide to create the spectacular Murchison Falls.
The park’s landscape is a striking mix of open savannah, riverine woodland, forests, and wetlands, supporting a wide range of wildlife. It is one of the best places in Uganda to see large mammals, including elephants, buffalo, giraffes (especially the Rothschild’s giraffe), lions, leopards, and numerous antelope species. The Nile River adds another dimension to the safari experience, concentrating wildlife along its banks and attracting abundant birdlife.
Murchison Falls combines classic savannah safari experiences with dramatic scenery and water-based activities, making it one of Uganda’s most complete and exciting national parks.

Murchison Falls Tour Activities
Game Drives
Game drives take place mainly on the northern bank of the Nile, where open grasslands provide excellent wildlife viewing.
Visitors commonly encounter elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hartebeest, Uganda kob, and predators such as lions and leopards. The open terrain allows for relaxed game drives with clear visibility.
Boat Safari on the Nile
A boat safari along the Victoria Nile is one of the park’s signature experiences. Cruising upstream toward the base of Murchison Falls offers close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and water birds.
The journey ends at the foot of the falls, where the thunderous roar and mist create a powerful and unforgettable moment.
Visit the Top of the Falls
A guided walk to the top of Murchison Falls allows visitors to stand above the narrow gorge and watch the Nile force its way through the rock before plunging below. This short hike offers dramatic views and excellent photographic opportunities.
Bird Watching
Murchison Falls National Park is home to over 450 bird species, making it one of Uganda’s top birding destinations. Highlights include the rare shoebill stork, often seen in the delta area, as well as kingfishers, herons, eagles, and many migratory species.
Best Time to Visit Murchison Falls
Dry Seasons (December to February & June to August)
These are the best times for wildlife viewing. Animals gather along the Nile and other water sources, vegetation is thinner, and road conditions are good.
Boat safaris and game drives are at their best during these months.
Green / Wet Seasons (March to May & September to November)
The park becomes lush and scenic, with fewer visitors and excellent birding opportunities.
While some tracks may be muddy, wildlife remains present, and the landscape is particularly photogenic.
Best Time of Day
Early morning game drives and late afternoon boat safaris offer the best wildlife activity and lighting.
Visits to the top of the falls are especially impressive in the morning when mist and sunlight create dramatic effects.
