Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Overview

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where wild rhinos can be seen, making it one of the country’s most important conservation success stories and a meaningful stop on any Uganda safari. Located in northwestern Uganda, about halfway between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park, the sanctuary covers approximately 70 square kilometers of protected savannah, woodland, and wetland habitats.

Established in 2005, Ziwa plays a critical role in reintroducing southern white rhinos to Uganda after the species was wiped out by poaching in the 1980s. Today, the sanctuary supports a steadily growing rhino population living under 24-hour armed protection, with a strong focus on conservation, monitoring, and education.Unlike traditional national parks, Ziwa offers a low-impact, conservation-focused safari experience.

Visitors explore the sanctuary primarily on foot, guided by experienced rangers who share insights into rhino behavior, tracking techniques, and the broader efforts to restore rhinos to Uganda’s protected areas. The sanctuary’s quiet atmosphere, open landscapes, and wetland systems also support a rich diversity of birdlife and smaller wildlife, adding depth to every visit.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is more than a wildlife stop it is a living conservation project that allows visitors to actively engage with Uganda’s efforts to bring rhinos back to where they belong in the wild.
